Independence Care

What is Independence Care in the Support at Home Programme?

If you’re part of the Support at Home programme, you might hear about independence care as a key way to help you stay active and in control at home.

Independence care is all about giving you the support you need to live life your way, and we’re here to make it feel easy and reassuring!

What is Independence Care?

According to the Support at Home service list from the Department of Health and Aged Care, independence care includes services to maintain or improve the ability of a person to perform daily tasks and activities.

This means practical, hands-on help to keep you doing the things you love – whether it’s getting dressed, moving around, or staying connected with your community. It’s designed to boost your confidence and independence, right in your own home.

Independence care is one part of the Support at Home programme, tailored to your needs and outlined in your Support Plan. It works alongside other supports like clinical care (e.g., nursing) or everyday living help (e.g., cleaning).

Examples of Independence Care Services

The government’s official service list includes these specific types of independence care.

As your care partner, we can help you choose what’s right for you:

Personal care

Help with daily tasks like showering, dressing, grooming, or toileting to keep you feeling confident and comfortable.

Medication prompting

Gentle reminders to take your medications on time (not administering them – that’s clinical care).

Transport assistance

Support to get to appointments, shops, or community events, so you stay connected and mobile.

Respite care

Short-term help to give you or your carer a break, like someone stepping in to assist for a few hours or days.

Mobility support

Assistance with moving around safely at home, like help getting in and out of bed or using mobility aids.

Support for social and community participation

Help to join social groups, visit friends, or attend activities that keep you engaged.

These services are funded through your quarterly budget, based on your assessed needs. You’ll only pay a means-tested contribution, so it’s affordable and fair.

Why is Independence Care Great for You?

Independence care helps you keep living life on your terms – with a bit of extra support to make it easier.
