How Mental Health Support Makes a Difference in Home Nursing Care

We work with NDIS participants who choose in-home nursing care to support their physical health. At My Way, we believe that well-being is about more than just providing this physical support—it’s also about attending to our participants’ mental health.

Our team of nurses is trained in both clinical nursing and mental health, which means they can support participants’ emotional needs alongside their physical care. This holistic approach is important because mental health directly impacts physical recovery and well-being.

Our nurses bring mental health training to the care environment, which allows them to recognise signs of low mood, anxiety, and behavioural changes that might go unnoticed without this expertise. Instead of focusing solely on physical symptoms, our nurses consider the underlying triggers or root causes of emotional changes. This training empowers our team to offer deeper support by addressing participants’ mental well-being and keeping an eye out for changes in their mood or outlook.

To help each participant feel engaged and uplifted, our nurses explore a person’s hobbies and interests, helping participants reconnect with activities they love, which can lift their spirits. For instance, if a participant enjoys drawing, our nurses might provide art supplies and encourage them to express themselves through art.

We aim to create moments of healing through activities that naturally soothe and inspire. Art, music, and mindfulness are just some of the ways we incorporate mental wellness into each participant’s daily care, bringing comfort and calm through these simple yet powerful actions.

This mental health-focused care is a team effort. Our nurses work alongside support workers, psychologists, and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) professionals to build and adjust care plans based on each participant’s needs. Even when there isn’t specific funding for PBS, our nurses draw on their mental health training and strategies from hospitals and community care settings to deliver the best support possible. For us, mental health isn’t an “add-on” but an essential part of every participant’s care.

At My Way, we believe that supporting mental health should be an everyday practice in nursing. We’re committed to including it in the care we provide. By offering this holistic approach, we’re not just caring for participants – we’re helping them stay connected to the things that bring them joy and purpose.
